Pilbara Ports has completed Stage 5 of the Utah road pavement rehabilitation project, delivering a key upgrade to one of Western Australia’s busiest freight corridors.

The A$11.8-million works, delivered in partnership with Ventia and funded by the state government, form part of a A$32.2-million multi-stage investment to restore and upgrade the 8.1 km Utah road. The corridor links the Great Northern Highway with Pilbara Ports’ Utah Bulk Handling Facility, a high-capacity export hub for commodities including mineral sands, salt and iron-ore.

Utah road also provides primary access for Fortescue’s Anderson Point and BHP’s Finucane Island facilities, with more than 500 road trains using the route daily. Super-quad vehicles on the road can carry up to 140 t each, making the freight corridor essential to maintaining export capacity in the Pilbara.

The Stage 5 upgrade aims to boost safety, reduce vehicle wear, and improve efficiency in transporting bulk commodities to global markets. The works were completed with minimal disruption to port operations.

“Investing in critical infrastructure like Utah road ensures we can continue to support Western Australia’s thriving resources sector. The completion of Stage 5 not only strengthens a key freight route, but also enhances safety and efficiency for many operators who rely on this corridor every day. The Cook government is investing in infrastructure that boosts resilience for our regional communities," said Ports Minister Stephen Dawson.
